Sugar, Apple TV Plus’ brand new Los Angeles noir, is a wonderfully atmospheric throwback to the hardboiled Hollywood classics of the past. Colin Farrell references Marlowe and Spade in this twisty, sun-soaked, Chinatown-esque thriller in which nothing is as it seems. In this Goggler exclusive, we speak to Sugar executive producers Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon about making grown-up TV, casting for a detective noir, and working through the show’s unique style.

The first two episodes of Sugar premiere on Apple TV Plus on April 5.

Sugar is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story. John Sugar, an American private investigator, is on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.

The series was created by Mark Protosevich and stars Colin Farrell, Kirby, Amy Ryan, James Cromwell, Anna Gunn, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry, Sydney Chandler,, and Alex Hernandez.
