Over the over the last few years, we’ve seen so many rom-coms try to change things up in order to keep things edgy. The To All the Boys trilogy, however, has taken something a different approach. Unlike those other movies, these three are a little more old school in how they’ve shamelessly doubled down on niceness and sweetness.

We spoke to Lana Condor who has some theories on why this particular style was crucial, not just for the story they were trying to tell, but for the audience as well.

It was really, really important to me, and I know it was important to the writers, and everyone who worked on these movies. We wanted to create a world that was soft, and kind, and touchable, and colourful. And slowed things down a bit.

I’ve said this before, but one of my most favourite, favourite parts of Lara Jean is that she’s not in a rush to grow up. Which I think is very different from the kids and teens these days who are in a rush to grow up. Sometimes, I think they wish that they could just skip it all and head right to adulthood. But that’s just no way to live. And Lara Jean takes things slowly, and she is soft, and her heart is good, and she loves love. That’s everything to her, love is the driving force of what makes Lara Jean, and because of that, the people that end up in her life, and the people that surround her, are also incredibly loving and kind. We wanted to show healthy, really healthy relationships between young people, and how communication is very, very important.

And I think that we have to show more kindness in mainstream media, particularly now more than ever. It takes every day waking up, choosing to be kind, and choosing to be good. And I think that we wanted to show a world where you kind of see that.

So I’m really happy that we stayed the course with To all the Boys, of showing softness and love because that’s what I like to see. And I think we need a little bit more of that.

We also spoke to Noah Centineo, who helped us dissect that New York cafe confession, and told us why it was so crucial to the movie.

To All the Boys: Always and Forever is now streaming on Netflix.
