The 2022 Academy Awards Best Picture Nominees

With the Oscars just around the corner, the 2022 awards season has finally come to a close. Despite the pandemic and cinema closures for most of last year, we’ve still been fortunate enough to catch most of the Best Picture nominees over here in Malaysia. Of the 10 films nominated for this year’s Academy Awards, only three films never made it to our shores (technically two, as the online streaming service Mubi will be screening Drive My Car on its service beginning April 1).

We figured you might be looking for our take on all of this year’s nominees, so we put together this handy dandy list for you.

CODA

This is the podcast in which we completely agree with Apple TV Plus’ decision to spend a record $25 million in buying CODA and premiering it on their service. You can also read our CODA review here.

Don’t Look Up

This is the podcast in which we found Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up to be a too scary, too close to home, too familiar social satire of the world we are all living in right now.

Drive My Car

This is the podcast in which we have differing opinions on Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Oscar nominated Drive My Car. We do, however, agree two things: 1) This isn’t a movie for everyone, and 2) it could be at least 40 minutes shorter.

Dune

This is the podcast in which we are utterly enthralled with Denis Villeneuve’s interpretation of the impossible to make Dune. You can also read our review of Dune here.

King Richard

This is the podcast in which we wonder if King Richard is the movie that will finally win Will Smith that Best Actor Oscar.

Licorice Pizza

This is the podcast in which we find Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza to be a little divisive: one of us loves it while the other is completely indifferent to it.

Nightmare Alley

This is the podcast in which we are glad to be able to watch adult dramas like Nightmare Alley at the cinema again. We also wrote about Nightmare Alley here.
