Apple TV Plus’ Sunny, based on the novel “The Dark Manual” by award-winning Japan-based Irish writer Colin O’Sullivan, is a bold, darkly comic, and wholly original look at a future in which robots and AI are completely integrated into every aspect of our lives. In this Goggler exclusive, we speak to series stars Rashida Jones and Hidetoshi Nishijima about working on a bilingual series, playing new characters, and on screen relationships.

Sunny is now streaming on Apple TV Plus.

In Sunny, Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, has her life upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As “consolation” she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company. Though at first, Suzie resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, gradually they develop an unexpected friendship. Together they uncover the dark truth of what really happened to Suzie’s family and become dangerously enmeshed in a world Suzie never knew existed.

Sunny was created by Katie Robbins and stars Rashida Jones, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Judy Ongg, You, annie the clumsy, and Jun Kunimura.
