Apple TV Plus’ Sunny, based on the novel “The Dark Manual” by award-winning Japan-based Irish writer Colin O’Sullivan, is a bold, darkly comic, and wholly original look at a future in which robots and AI are completely integrated into every aspect of our lives. In this Goggler exclusive, we spoke to legendary Japanese actors Jun Kunimura and Judy Ongg about their relationship with technology and why they decided to do the series.

Sunny is now streaming on Apple TV Plus.

In Sunny, Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, has her life upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As “consolation” she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company. Though at first, Suzie resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, gradually they develop an unexpected friendship. Together they uncover the dark truth of what really happened to Suzie’s family and become dangerously enmeshed in a world Suzie never knew existed.

Sunny was created by Katie Robbins and stars Rashida Jones, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Judy Ongg, You, annie the clumsy, and Jun Kunimura.
