Rap Shit, HBO’s brant new sitcom, tells the story of the formation of Miamis latest rap duo, Shawna and Mia, as they try and find their way in a male dominated industry, balance personal lives, all while not falling into rap cliches. In this Goggler exclusive, we got the chance to speak to writers and producers, Issa Rae and Syreeta Singleton, about how and why they decided to tell this story.

Rap Shit, Issa Rae’s latest half-hour comedy series for HBO Max, is a case study in confidence; the show follows two estranged high school friends from Miami who form an unlikely rap group, determined to achieve their dreams of making waves in the music industry. The cast of Rap Shit is a mix of actors, comedians, and real-life rappers. Love and Hip Hop: Miami star KaMillion will play Mia, a makeup artist, and a single mother to a four-year-old daughter, who works three jobs to make ends meet. KaMillion is best known for her song “Twerk 4 Me.” She’s also a Grammy Award–winning songwriter who’s written for Rihanna and H.E.R. Comedian Aida Osman will play Shawna, an aspiring rapper who has a day job at a hotel. Osman is best known for hosting the Crooked Media culture and politics podcast Keep It. She has also written on HBO’s Betty and Netflix’s Big Mouth.

Rap Shit was created by Issa Rae and stars Aida Osman, KaMillion, Jonica Booth, Devon Terrell, and RJ Cyler.
