Apple TV Plus’ new limited series, Lessons in Chemistry, tells the story of Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant chemist stuck in a time when women weren’t taken seriously in the world. The series follows Brie Larson’s Zott as she tries to navigate a scientific world that won’t accept her, and a wider world that only sees her as a potential housekeeper. In this Goggler exclusive, we got the chance to sit down with Lessons in Chemistry showrunner, Lee Eisenberg, and director, Sarah Adina Smith, to talk about the show’s portrayal of men of the 1950s, their influences, and Brie Larson’s Elizabeth Zott.

The first episode of Lessons in Chemistry is now streaming on Apple TV Plus.

Based on the bestselling, debut novel of the same name from author, science editor, and copywriter Bonnie Garmus, the series is set in the early 1950s and follows Elizabeth Zott, whose dream of being a scientist is put on hold in a patriarchal society. When Elizabeth finds herself fired from her lab, she accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show called “Supper at Six,” and sets out to teach a nation of overlooked housewives — and the men who are suddenly listening — a lot more than recipes.

Lessons in Chemistry was created by Lee Eisenberg and stars Brie Larson, Lewis Pullman, Aja Naomi King, Stephanie Koenig, Kevin Sussman, Patrick Walker, and Thomas Mann.
