I think I speak for everyone when I say that we now live in a world where the idea of a superhero is pretty commonplace. Be it Marvel or DC, it’s a genre that you cannot escape. But there is one unlikely group of heroes that have somehow managed to break out of that clean, slick, save the world formula and is ready to fuck shit up for yet another round of insane, balls out madness. Yes, my fellow geeks, The Boys have returned, and in a big, bad way.
After being on hiatus for the last two years, due to a certain pandemic, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and his motley crew of unique heroes have returned to take down Vought once again, but this time, they need a little, unorthodox help from the extremely old school, loud mouthed, misogynistic supe, Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles). And if the opening sequence in the first episode is anything to go by (if you know, you know), this season is going to be just as insane as its predecessor. (I mean, from what we hear, Episode 6 is going to be the infamous “Herogasm” story, and if you’ve read the comics, you know, this is going to get all kinds of fucked up.)
“You Wanna Get Nuts? Come On! Let’s Get Nuts!”
With the first four episodes out, Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg look set to up the stakes like never before. I know what you’re thinking. How could they possibly do more than what’s happened before? We had a freaking Nazi superhero, the most intense (weird, messed up, freaky) sex scene you could find on television, and how can we forget that moment with The Deep just yelling at kids in a water park.
In fact, with each new season of The Boys, it feels like Eric Kripke, and his entire writing team, seem hell bent on the idea of fucking with The Deep. Because Lord help us, The Deep has just turned into this poor, pitiful superhero that no one gives a shit about. (And don’t even get me started on Timothy the octopus.)
The first two seasons of The Boys were fantastic examples of great storytelling and ingenuity that went a long way towards combating superhero fatigue. And Season 3 looks to continue that trend. We begin this season with Vought introducing a new formula that allows normal human beings to become superheroes for 24 hours. God knows that can only mean one thing: Butcher’s going wild, but at a price. And with Homelander getting more and more psychotic with each season, Butcher is going to need all the help he can get. My guess is that we might finally see a massive showdown between Butcher and Homelander on and even playing ground. Bring it on!
This Ain’t Your Dad’s Captain America
Speaking of Homelander, Anthony Starr has yet again delivered a performance that can best be described as chilling. There’s just something in his eyes that have the ability to both calm and terrify you at the same time. With all the losses Homelander has suffered, both in love, and with his son, you can feel him boiling and ready to explode at any point. The problem being that we don’t know when that point is, and are left with as much anxiety as the rest of the team.
While Soldier Boy hasn’t been a main fixture just yet within The Boys universe, I am definitely excited to see his story plays out within this television universe. Considering he is essentially the Captain America of this story, just less Boy Scout and more… Peacemaker… but a bigger asshole, if that makes sense. With Jensen Ackles stepping into those shoes, I for one am eagerly awaiting to see what he brings to the table. I mean, this is Dean Winchester we’re talking about and God knows the man can kick some ass.
With four more episodes left to go, it’s going to be interesting to see how this dynamic shifts, now that “normal” folks have access to be superheroes. Ideally, this could could give them enough power to make the world right again and hold the supes accountable for their mistakes. With great power, comes great responsibility, but with Butcher around, things could get really out of hand.
Then again, anything could happen. Because with The Boys, fuck knows what fuckery we could fucking see from this series. I think that sums it up quite well actually.
