5 Reasons Why You Should Watch Another Round in Malaysian Cinemas

Dept. of Drinks and Danes!

//

We received a pleasant surprise this week when we found out that Another Round (aka Druk), 2021’s Oscar winner for Best International Feature Film would be coming to GSC’s International Screens. Thomas Vinterberg’s film may have been originally released in 2020, but catching it on the big screen now is probably the easiest way to watch it in Malaysia.

Here are five reasons why we think you should venture out to the cinemas to watch Another Round.

1. No Matter Your Stance on Alcohol Consumption It Might Make You See It in a Different Light…

For a country with a, let’s say complicated relationship with alcohol, Anther Round offers a look at a how Denmark handles alcohol consumption. The film concerns four school teachers, Martin (Mads Mikkelsen), Tommy (Thomas Bo Larsen), Nikolaj (Magnus Millang), and Peter (Lars Ranthe), who are all facing various mid-life crises at home or professionally. When Nikolaj raises “Skårderud’s Theory,” that humans are born with 0.05% less blood alcohol that they should have, at his 40th Birthday party, the quartet embark on an experiment to see what would happen if they “fixed” the deficit. While initial results seem positive, like the scientists of Flatliners or Brainstorm, these explorers delve a little too deeply, raising some interesting ideas about how the Danes, and much of the West, view alcohol.

2. Mads Mikkelsen Dances and It Is Glorious!

Throughout their drinking sessions Martin’s friends tease him about his past as a “jazz ballet“ dancer, while he gently rebuffs their pleas to show off his skills. As you might expect from a man who has an entire twitter account dedicated to him just doing “stuff” (and doing it in the best way possible), when he eventually relents, it is amazing! (Don’t look it up online. Some things are better experienced on the big screen.)

3. When Was the Last Time You Saw a Danish Movie in the Cinema?

Film critic Roger Ebert once called movies the most powerful empathy machine in all the arts.” “When I go to a great movie I can live somebody else’s life for a while. I can walk in somebody else’s shoes.”

It’s very true, however, you’ll never walk in somebody else shoes unless you try them on first.

Only by voting with your wallets and actually going to see movies like Another Round in cinemas, when you get the chance, do you tell the cinema chains that there is a hunger out there for more content like this.

4. When Was the Last Time You Saw an “Adult” Movie in Theatres?

Get your mind out of the gutter! We don’t mean that kind of adult. We mean “adult” as in a movie that raises grown up problems and deals with them in a nuanced, realistic way. Martin and his friends’ experiment might sound like the set up for an Adam Sandler movie, and while initial results indicate that being ever so slightly tipsy might yield some net positives, as they progress, the dangers of alcohol, alcoholism, and the supposed freedom from inhibition that alcohol brings, become all too clear. And yet the film isn’t a polemic against alcohol consumption.

See? Nuance.

5. It’s Funny!

Despite what may seem like heavy material, Another Round is frequently funny, while also being heartfelt, and even at times sad. If that’s not worth going to the cinema for I don’t know what is.
