All the Bonds: From Russia with Love

We’re watching every Bond movie, one by one, every night, until the premiere of No Time to Die. Up next, the movie that Sean Connery called his “personal favourite”: From Russia with Love.

Probably the slowest burn of all the Bond movies to date, From Russia with Love feels a lot more like a John le Carré joint than it does an Ian Flemming one. The movie feels a little too dour at times for James Bond, but the infamous “lion tamer” fight with Rosa Klebb more than makes up for it.

James Bond Minutiae

Desmond Llewelyn appears as Q/Major Boothroyd for the first time in From Russia with Love. Peter Burton first played the character in Dr. No (1962). When Burton was unable to return for this movie, Llewelyn was cast. Llewelyn went on to play the character of Q in 16 subsequent Bond movies (17 in all – he didn’t appear in Live and Let Die (1973)). Q is only referred to by his real name, Major Boothroyd, in this movie, Dr. No (1962), and The Spy Who Loved Me (1977).
