Netflix’s Lost in Space reboot is finally back for its second season! What, you weren’t waiting with bated breath?
In case you missed the first season, the updated series takes the “Space Family Robinson” (“Science Mom” Maureen, “War Dad” John, daughters Judy and Penny and, of course, son Will) on an adventure after their colony ship to Alpha Centauri is attacked by… “something”. Diverging from the original series, here the Robinson’s aren’t quite so alone on their journey, and are joined by numerous other small Jupiter colony craft from the Resolute mother ship, along their crews, including engineer Don West and conniving con-woman “Dr. Smith” (a fantastic Parker Posey).
Despite some dodgy science at the start, the show settled into a comfortable groove once the characters stopped making dunderheaded decisions like tying themselves to weather balloons and not telling anyone else. Nice one Mom!
The second season looks to continue the impressive design and special effects of the first and focus on the main mystery of the series and biggest shake up from the original premise; the Robot. No longer part of the Jupiter 2’s standard equipment, the Robot is of alien origin, its background hinted at but its motivations unclear.
Key to the success or failure of this season will be how it pays off on the mystery of the Robot and what the show will do once that question is answered. Netflix is also taking a gamble by releasing the show on Christmas Eve, the first time they’ve done so for one of their major series.
So tell us, will you cosy up with the Robinson family this Christmas?
Lost in Space, Season 2 stars Molly Parker, Toby Stephens, Maxwell Jenkins, Taylor Russell, Mina Sundwall, Ignacio Serricchio, and Parker Posey, and debuts on Netflix on the 24th December 2019.
